Social Media as a Magazine?

When Apple first announced the iPad, I reserved mine the day they open up the reservation/pre-order site. As a photographer I saw the iPad as the perfect device to show potential clients my work. Up until that point I had been using my iPhone to show off my work. The iPhone is a great tool, but to use it as a photo viewer for clients is like showing them a bunch of 4x6 prints (only smaller). When I finally got the iPad I saw it as much more. I now find myself reading more of my trade magazines and sites. I have also used it to show current clients work that was actually being done at that very location and know of several other photogs doing the same thing. One thing I never considered was an idea that a company by the name of Flipboard is doing, Social Media as a magazine. Imagine seeing all your social networks in one place but not like TweetDeck and HootSuite do it. I’m talking about actually flipping pages on your iPad as if you were reading a magazine in Zinio. The only difference is this magazine is full of live feeds from your friends, trade associations and anything else you may follow on Facebook and Twitter. They are also linking other forms of social media and allowing people to added connect of their own. I thought this had to be one of the best ideas since the iPad itself and I wasn’t alone. Flipboard had so many people trying to sign up for their service they couldn’t keep up. They actually had to go to a reservation system just to get a slot to sign up.

I have been using Flipboard for about a week now and I have to say it’s better than I was expecting. I have always hated scrolling through my facebook feed, and don’t get me started on the twitter feeds. Flipboard takes these feeds and pulls them in to a visually pleasing display of everything you follow. Photos from your friends in Facebook show up like they would in a Magazine. Stuff your friends say show up like quotes in an article. Now Twitter….. when someone posts a link to a website it actually pulls the first bit of that article so you can start reading it. Ever clicked on a link only to find you have no interest in the article? I sure have, and this gives me a quick glance without going anywhere.

Because Flipboard uses your network feeds, the news is filtered to what you like. If your like me you’ll find you have more news than you have time to read. Best of all…… Flipboard is free and you can download it now from the App Store. Go check it out and let me know what you think.

Ever want to make a commercial using equipment you already have?

Have you ever wanted to make a commercial or some kind of video but don’t want to buy all the fancy equipment you think it takes to make one? Ever seen that Levi’s ad with they guy walking across America wearing Levi’s jeans? It’s actually pretty easy to make these ads and you probably won’t have to spend a dime on new equipment.

This video shows how a few guys did it in 14 days with just one camera, a tripod, a protractor, a string and some simple math.

After a few thousand miles and about the same number of photos, here is their final product. Enjoy the videos, and get there and shot something.

Grants first dive.

My little buddy loves the water already. Although we have had him in the pool and up at the lake already, today was his first underwater visit. Here is a video a shot of this venture. I hope to get some photos of him in the next week or so. When I do take those photos, I will video the entire shoot and post that here too.

Mad River Mountain Swamp Stomp

We packed up the gear on Saturday and headed to Mad River Mountain for their annual Swamp Stomp. For those of you that are not sure, the Swamp Stomp is an event where they dig a pit at the bottom of one of the slopes and fill it with water.

This years pit was 150 ft long and about 12 ft wide. It was so cool to see these guys (and girls) come tearing down the slope and skip across the water. A lot of them made it all the way, some of them fell short. One thing is for sure, it was a blast. While out there, Greg decided to test out how well his D300 is sealed to the elements. Looks as if Nikon did a good job because his camera just had to be dried off. It was back up and working just fine later that day. I wish I could say the same thing for Greg. He got a really bad sun burn. I got some sun too, but mine just gave me a reddish face with a funny hat tan line.

Here are a few more pictured from the event. As you can see even the ones who didn’t make it made for great photos.

Please welcome Grant Edward Andreas

Grant Edward Andreas decided he wasn’t going to follow the doctors time line and made his appearance today (2/27/10) at 6:15am. Grant weighed in at 7lbs 5oz and was 20 inches long. Mom and baby are doing fantastic. Here is a quick shot I took with my iPhone while in the nursery with him. I will be posting more pictures as soon as I get a chance and can tear myself away from this guy long enough to edit.

Shelly has been a real trooper. Within 12 hours of her surgery, she was walking around the halls of the maternity ward. Last night I pushed Grant in his crib along side Shelly as she took her walk. Our first family walk. Once the weather clears up there will be plenty more of those!!!

The second day he was with us I started playing with his hands and feet. I noticed he tended to swat at my hand as it came near him. Here is a quick video I shot of the game. Quality is not that great, but it shows just how smart of a little guy we have here. Give me five

Big Air Snow Day

Mad River Mountain Big Air Event

On January 30th, as part of Winterfest Weekend, Mad River Mountain will be hosting a Big Air Event in the Capital Park at 6:00PM. Skiers and Riders alike will show off their talent to send themselves hurtling through the air in an effort to win the first place prize! Ryan Andreas Photography will be there covering the event from start to finish.

We will be focusing on the BIG AIR competition, utilizing three camera, three strobes, and two shooters. We’ve been planning this shoot for a week, tossing ideas around on how to make this shoot better than the last. Our biggest question, will the strobes work more than once. It is going to be cold, very cold, 15 degree cold. We are asking a lot of gear to work in weather that we are not sure we want to be in. But, we want the shot, and we’ll do anything to get it.

Here is what we are planning: Ryan will be shooting a D3, Greg will be shooting a D300, and we will have a D200 setup as a remote camera. We will be sharing 3 strobes, one placed on the right of the jump, one placed on the left of the jump, and one placed with the D200. Using Pocket Wizards, we will be able to control a strobe and/or the remote camera.

iPhone Photos

Chase Jarvis says “The Best Camera is one that is with you” and I completely agree. In the age where digital has made taking a picture just another button, where did the art go? I can remember not too long ago,as a photographer, you were very specific of what you took photos of. Film and development are expensive. You wanted to make sure the shot was what you were looking for and that your camera settings were correct. There was no screen to look at to see if you set it correctly. I have talked before about the time I spent with my grandpa developing pictures and learning the basics of photography, and never once did he go out and “just hope” he got the shot. Yes, even with film photography there was post production work that was done and adjustments you could make to correct for highlights and lowlights but photography was photography.

As photographers, we have become complacent with our skills. With cameras that shoot 11 frames/sec and can shoot in almost no light at 25,600 ISO we just assume we’ll get the shot and rely too much on the camera. “Spay and Pray” is one of the terms given to what I am talking about. Well….. we’re right to a point. My Nikon D3 can help me avoid making a mistake or missing a shot on a photo shoot every time, but it can’t tell me what to shoot. It can’t frame the image for me. It also does me absolutely NO good when I’m out with my wife for dinner or shopping or just taking a walk, if I don’t have it with me. This is where the whole “Best Camera” idea comes in. Todays camera phones can take great quality photos and they are almost always with you. In fact, if your like a lot of people, it’s probably glued to your face most of the day. You may even be reading this blog on one. I have my iPhone with me all the time and now I have one more reason to carry it. I started taking a ton a photos with it and posting them to this blog and Facebook. Not really for anyone but me, I do this mainly to keep my “vision” so to speak. It helps me record ideas for future shots, special moments and just random junk. Will I use my iPhone for a customer shoot…. probably not, but I would use it to scout ideas for one as I said earlier.

Technology is a great thing, it has opened a lot of doors for photographers. We just need to remember to keep it as an extension to our skills not a crutch.
